Women’s basketball’s upset bid falls just short at No. 3 Carson-Newman:
The Lander women’s basketball team fought to a tie with less than five minutes remaining against third-ranked Carson-Newman on Friday afternoon, but the Eagles held the Bearcats without a field goal over the final 5:10 to thwart Lander’s upset bid and eek out an 89-84 win.
Lander (1-1) held a 30-25 advantage after the first quarter and was led by Jessica Harris’ 22 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Quin’De’Ja Hamilton came off the bench to knock down six three-pointers and finish with 18 points on the day. Ariana Sanders chipped in 14 points and five assists, while Tabitha Dailey pulled down 13 rebounds.
Carson-Newman (2-0) got a double-double from Kayla Marosites, who finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Lander held Marosites to just five points in the second half. The Eagles finished with a 47-35 advantage on the boards.
The Bearcats will welcome North Greenville to Finis Horne Arena for the home opener on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m.
