Women’s soccer routs USC Aiken for largest win of the season:
The Lander women’s soccer team scored four goals over a 13-minute span to pull away from USC Aiken on Wednesday night in a 5-1 Peach Belt Conference road win.
The four-goal differential marked Lander’s (9-2-1, 4-2-1 PBC) largest margin of victory of the year. The Bearcats improved to 11-0-1 in their last 12 meetings with USC Aiken (2-10, 0-7 PBC).
Lander opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Kelcie Fisher beat Pacer keeper Tashiana Kwatowski off a pass from Brianna Taylor to put the Bearcats up 1-0. The Pacers responded at the 35:44 mark as Willa Olson netted the equalizer.
From there, Lander’s offense took over. Emily Jermstad beat Kwatowski to a ball outside the box in the 41st minute and fired into an empty net to put the Bearcats back on top before halftime. Following the intermission, Fisher netted her second goal just 50 seconds into the second half, converting on a pass from Juliette Vidal in front of the net.
Just over two minutes later, Lander increased its lead to 4-1 when Taylor followed up a saved shot from Jermstad, tapping it into the right side of the net. Jermstad would score her second goal of the evening at the 52:59 mark as Taylor passed to Vidal in the center of the box, who sent a touch to Jermstad on the left side. Jermstad’s shot snuck under the crossbar to give the Bearcats a commanding 5-1 lead.
The five goals were the most scored by Lander in a road PBC match since a 6-1 win at Georgia Southwestern on Sept. 19, 2015.
The Bearcats return to Van Taylor Stadium on Saturday for Senior Night against Flagler at 7:00 p.m.
