No. 10 Lander uses two Skelton PKs to beat Carson-Newman:
The 10th-ranked Lander men’s soccer team got two penalty kicks from senior Jordan Skelton, including one with just 65 seconds remaining in regulation, to earn a 2-1 road win over Carson-Newman on Wednesday night.
The Bearcats (9-1-1) earned its fourth win away from home this season as the Eagles (6-3-1) surrendered multiple goals for just the second time all season.
Skelton converted his first opportunity at the 39:44 mark to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. However, Carson-Newman would take advantage of a Bearcat miscue just five minutes into the second half, netting the equalizer on a one-on-one opportunity for Greg Evans.
Both squads battled to find the go-ahead goal over the next 38 minutes and Lander earned its best chance when Skelton was awarded a second penalty kick at the 88:55 mark.
The Bearcat captain placed the ball to the right of a diving Twan Verweij to put Lander back on top. The Bearcat defense held the Eagles off the board for the final minute to secure the win.
The game-winning PK was Skelton’s fifth successful penalty kick of the season and the 23rdd consecutive made penalty kick by the Bearcats.
Lander will host North Georgia on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Van Taylor Stadium.
