Lander opens fall campaign with losses to Newberry, Presbyterian:
The Lander women’s tennis team fell to Newberry and Presbyterian in its first matches of the 2018-19 season on Saturday. The Bearcats dropped a 4-1 decision to Newberry and were topped by Presbyterian, 6-1.
Eduarda Ferreira provided Lander’s point against the Wolves. Playing at the No. 1 singles spot, Ferreira defeated Elisa Aguirre 6-4, 6-1 for Lander’s first win of the day. Lander’s No. 1 doubles combination of Nelli Lius and Isabella Schulz pushed Newberry, but fell 7-5.
Against the Blue Hose, the Bearcats earned a point at No. 6 singles as Schulz cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Shelly Ray. Ferreira put up a great fight at No. 2 singles, but was defeated 7-6, 7-5.
Lander will be back in action this week at the Southeast ITA Regional Tournament in Sumter, S.C., from Sept. 27-30.
