Lander draws with No. 22 Georgia College in unbeaten PBC showdown:

The Lander women’s soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-1 draw against 22nd-ranked Georgia College in its Peach Belt Conference opener on Friday night at Van Taylor Stadium.

The Bearcats (5-0-1, 0-0-1 PBC) netted the first goal of the season allowed by the Bobcats (5-0-1, 0-0-1 PBC) and snapped a four-match regular-season conference winning streak for Georgia College

“The girls played well tonight,” said head coach Chris Ayer. “There were some really, really, really good stretches, it was fun. There are little things we can correct this coming week, but it’s a really good group of girls. With 20 freshmen and sophomore and five upperclassmen who do a great job of leading, it’s a fun group to work with.”

Lander became the first team to score on Georgia College in 2018 when Chloe Le Franc sent a pass to Brianna Taylor just beyond the top of the box in the 51st minute. The sophomore turned right and curled a shot into the upper-right corner for her third goal of the season.

Georgia College would get the equalizer in the 68th minute when Amanda Bartholomew took a pass from Erin Ferris off a free kick and delivered a shot from outside the box that slipped under the crossbar to even the score.

Despite the two teams attempting 39 shots on the evening, including 20 on goal attempts, neither side could pull ahead through the remaining 22 minutes of regulation or overtime, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.

Sarah Owen made four saves on the evening for the Bearcats, while Ashlee Graham made 14 saves for Georgia College. Lander held a 15-5 advantage in shots on goal.

The Bearcats host Francis Marion on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
