No. 15 women’s basketball tips off home opener on Saturday


GREENWOOD – The No. 15-ranked Lander women’s basketball officially opens the home portion of its 2017-18 regular season at Finis Horne Arena on Sat., Nov. 18, at 1:30 p.m. against Limestone.

• Lander begins its 42nd season of women’s basketball and its 13th under the tutelage of head coach Kevin Pederson.

• The Bearcats are 4-0 in their last four home openers.

• Saturday’s game marks the final home opener for seniors Breshay JohnsonMylea McKenith and Zuzana Talackova.

• Junior guard Chelsea Mitchell leads the Bearcats with 10.0 rebounds per game, while Johnson paces the team with 17.5 points per game.

• Limestone posted a 27-5 record last season, advancing to the Conference Carolinas tournament championship game and the NCAA Tournament. The Bearcats handed the Saints two of their five losses, defeating Limestone 81-72 in the regular season and 70-50 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

• Overall, Lander and Limestone have met 28 times, with the Bearcats holding a 19-9 advantage in the series.

• Lander is 51-20 in home games over the past five seasons.
