Bearcats return to winning ways against Pacers

GREENWOOD – The Lander women’s soccer team (6-4, 3-3 PBC) ended its two-game losing skid with a resounding 3-0 victory over USC Aiken (3-9, 2-4 PBC). For goalkeeper Sarah Owen, the shutout victory marks the freshman’s fourth clean sheet of the season.

Forward Sara Flores got the scoring started for the Bearcats as the senior notched her second goal of the season in the 25th minute. Senior Hannah Martin added the game’s second goal in the 31st minute to round out the first half scoring. Sophomore Emily Jermstadwas credited with her second assist of the season off the Martin goal.

Martin entered the 2017 season with just one goal to her name. This year, the senior leads the team in scoring while ranking 9th in the Peach Belt with six goals.

Freshman midfielder Juliette Vidal topped off the Bearcat scoring in the 51st minute with her second goal of the season. Freshman Chloe Le Franc recorded her first assist of the season off of the Vidal goal.

Lander registered three shots on goal in the remaining 39 minutes of play; however, Pacer goalkeeper Karin Cadwalader was able to keep the Bearcats at bay with three saves.

The Lander backline allowed only one shot on goal in the decisive 3-0 victory. The Bearcats have allowed just 1.56 goals per game this season, as opposed to the team’s 2016 mark of 2.44.

Lander will step out of conference play on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. road kickoff against Mars Hill.
