Five Health Related Issues that Freshmen Should Pay Attention to.

There are many health issues that freshmen all over the world should stay cautious about. But according to Kimberly Shannon Lander University Nurse, there are five main issues that bother the average freshman.

Shannon works with the Wellness Center here at Lander University. She gave me this advice to help lead freshman in the right direction of staying healthy.

Issue #1 is Diet

Without careful attention to your diet, students could end up putting on the freshman 15 and more. It is very important to stay on track of keeping a healthy and beneficial diet. Some tips to maintain a healthy diet, according to Shannon, would be to learn proper portion size, keep healthy snack around, don’t fight stress by eating, try eating and veggies, don’t skip meals.

Issue #2 is Exercise

Fitting exercise into busy class schedules isn’t always the easiest thing, but everyone needs to take the time to stay on track to making sure that they are staying fit. Some tips to make sure that you are exercising right would be to stretch first, play sports, and go to the gym at least three times a week.

Issue #3 is Sleep College students aren’t exactly known for their early to bed early to rise attitudes, but getting sleep is an integral part of staying healthy. College students need to make sure they are resting enough.  Some tips to make sure you are getting enough sleep are: to take a nap, don’t work in bed, avoid “all-nighters”, and create a bedtime routine.

Issue #4 is Stress

College students need to make sure they take enough time to relax just as much as they are taking enough time to study. Shannon said that students can get so overwhelmed with matter such as stress with friends, jobs, and even finical issues that it’s easy to start losing slight of your health.

Some tips to keep your stress levels down would be to give yourself a break, understand you can’t do everything, cut back if needed, relax with hobbies, and learn time management skills.

Issue #5 is Sexual Health

College is a place where many students choose to explore their sexuality. Students who are sexually active need to make sure that they are doing this safely.

Here are some tips to make sure that you are practicing a safe sexual lifestyle: make sure to get tested regularly if having sex with different partners, take advantage of vaccinations, always use protection, and make sure to not do anything that you’re not comfortable with.
