Baseball racks up 16 hits in 17-4 win over Anderson

The Lander baseball team smacked 16 hits, including five doubles and two home runs, to win its second straight game Thursday night as the Bearcats toppled Anderson, 17-4, in a non-conference contest at Dolny Stadium.

Lander improves to 10-13 overall, while Anderson drops to 6-18.

Making his first career start, Cameron Tekker (3-0) was awarded the win after striking out seven, walking three and allowing one run on three hits in 5.0 innings.

Anderson’s Thomas Smith (0-3) took the loss after striking out two, walking two and allowing five runs on six hits in 3.0 innings.

Nathan Schreckengost put the Bearcats on the scoreboard first when he singled home Colton Yeager in the bottom of the first. Bailey Connell followed with a ground ball that was mishandled at third base, allowing Alex Conaway to score.

Anderson got on the board in top of the third, but the Bearcats answered in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run from Carson Jones, an RBI single from Mason Dodd and a sacrifice fly from Alec Dowell.

A two-run double from Dodd in the fifth put Lander up 7-1 and the Bearcats broke the game open with six runs in the sixth inning. Conaway singled home Yeager and Dowell, Schreckengost doubled down the right field line to plate Conaway and then scored on an error, Reed Gray drove in Connell with a single and Ryan Troutman capped the inning with an RBI single.

The Trojans cut the lead to 13-4 with a three-run seventh, but Chuck Lawing blasted a three-run homer, his first as a Bearcat, in the bottom of the inning. Gray raced home on an error to end the scoring.

For Lander, Gray and Schreckengost each batted 3-for-4, while Conaway and Dodd both went 2-for-4.
