Lander Presents Cello and Piano Artist Recital on January 30
GREENWOOD, S.C. – A cellist and pianist duo will perform a mixture of classical and contemporary pieces on Monday, Jan. 30, at St. Mark United Methodist Church on Highway 72 Bypass.
The program, featuring Dr. Richard Thomas, cellist, and Amy Blackwood, pianist, is part of Lander University’s artist recital series. Selections include pieces by composers Ludwig van Beethoven, Manuel de Falla, Arvo Pärt, Blas Atehortúak and Francesco Cilèa.
Amy Blackwood, a full-time piano accompanist at Lander, works with singers, instrumentalists and choral ensembles in the Department of Music. A versatile pianist, she is a member of the National Wind Ensemble and has performed at Carnegie Hall and at the Ameropa Chamber Music Festival in Prague, where she worked with renowned clarinetist Stepan Koutnik. Blackwood holds a Master in Music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Dr. Richard Thomas, associate professor of music and director of the chamber orchestra at Presbyterian College, is an accomplished cellist who has recently performed and taught in China, Japan, Taiwan and Ecuador. His repertoire includes performances with the South Carolina Philharmonic, Greater Anderson Musical Arts Consortium Orchestra (GMAC), Augusta Symphony, East Texas Symphony, Dallas Lyric Opera Orchestra, Wilmington Symphony Orchestra and the Dominican Republic’s Orquesta Sinfónica de Colombia, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional. Thomas received a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of South Carolina. He will be playing a 2015 Michael Köeberling cello during Monday’s performance.
The free concert begins at 8 p.m. and is open to the community. It is FALS-approved for students at Lander University.
