Lander Homecoming: Theme Process

Jill Franklin, Asst. Director of Student Activities and the Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life is in her first year working at Lander University. Franklin is in charge of putting Homecoming together and setting up all the activities for Lander Universities Homecoming.
“Choosing the themes for Homecoming takes a couple of months and even after deciding on one, it still takes some time to put it all together,” said Franklin. “We have to see what things that are going to take place, the times, and days certain events are going to happen.”
Homecoming at Lander is held in the spring during basketball season.
The Homecoming theme for this year will be the Emerald City Homecoming of 2017. Greenwood is known as the Emerald city, and by it being called that, “We are trying to combine the community with the school and festivities that will be going on, on campus,” states Franklin.
For this upcoming Homecoming on the first day, there will be a “Spirit-day” which means wear any Lander gear you have. Franklin states, “We will have a Banner reveal of the Homecoming name at 5:00 p.m., and Spirit night that will all take place at Horne arena before the women’s and men’s basketball game at 5:30 p.m.”
On Tuesday, there will be softball/baseball game and a “Survey Says” at 8:00 p.m. in Horne arena.
On Wednesday there will be a Habitat kickoff at 1:00 p.m., Men/ Women’s tennis match at 2 p.m., and a “Survey Says” in Horne arena at 8:00 p.m.
On Thursday there will be a Medallion Search at 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. “This is something new! It will take place on campus and Uptown in Greenwood. There will be a total of 5 medallion’s place somewhere for people to find and whoever finds the most will get a special prize,” mentions Franklin.
On Friday is the parade. The things that will be taking place during the parade will be the Soapbox Car judging at 4 p.m. in the PEES circle and the Soapbox Car Race will be at 4:30 p.m. on Wilson Street.
On Saturday we have a Homecoming tailgate at 11:00 a.m. before the women’s basketball game at 1:30 p.m. following the men’s basketball game at 3:30 p.m.
