Maria Morales-Moreno has been chosen as the 2017 recipient of the South Carolina International Reading Association’s(SCIRA) Florence Nelson undergraduate scholarship. Ms. Morales-Moreno has received this honor due to her compelling commitment to the mission and vision of the SCIRA to promote literacy through the improvement of reading instruction, to encourage reading as a lifetime tool for learning, and to foster the information of the reading habit.
As an elementary education major of Lander’s Department of Teacher Education, Ms. Morales-Moreno is also an active member of the Piedmont Reading Council, her local literacy organization. A native of Greenwood, Ms. Morales aspires to become a third grade teacher so that she can truly make a difference in children’s lives. According to Maria, “Support of literacy is essential for all learning. With strong literacy skills, all other learning is possible”.
Ms. Morales will be honored February 23-25, 2017 at the 42nd Annual SCIRA conference at the Marriott Resort and Spa in Hilton Head.
