Lift Every Voice is the title of the grand opening ceremony of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the newest and 19th Smithsonian museum. Its grand opening is Saturday, September 24, 2016. There was a live viewing of the ceremony in the Learning Center.
Lift Every Voice is designed to” . . . showcase and honor the work of all institutions and individuals preserving, honoring and sharing the many stories of African American and African Diaspora people and their contributions to the American story.”
Lander Professor Linda Carson, Lecturer of Criminal Justice and Sociology, explained the meaning of the phrase, Lift Every Voice in this instance, “Lift Every Voice is meant to count every American citizen regardless of their race or ethnicity.” Carson continued, “It mainly focuses on the culture that the African American population brought into the United States and continues to offer whether through music, poetry, academia. Just all aspects of society.”
