With the success that the Lander Men Basketball team achieved last season, can the returning and incoming players make the same thing happen again this coming season? Coach Steve Roberts commented, “We have half old guys and have new guys on the team. JR Washington, a senior at Lander, is one player that’s coming back.” Roberts continued, “We expect a big year out of him. He has had three great years with us.”
Roberts went on to say that he would be expecting JR to step up and lead the team. Coach Roberts attributed a lot of last year’s success to the leadership ability of the now graduated Tobias Hose and Scotty Elder.
Also mentioned as standouts on the team are Rahu Pardie, Sophomore, and Sergio Smith, Senior. An interesting thing is that Sergio played all season last year while injured and had a serious surgery over the summer. Rahu, who came in as freshmen last year, started a lot of games. He went to the Peach Belt Tournament on the All Star Team. So it can be said that when JR and Sergio graduated, Rahu will be looked at to lead the team.
Currently there are no standout new players on the team, though they are all good players. Roberts said that they had a great group of freshmen who have joined the team. With the transfers, they decided to take a wait and see approach.
Coach Roberts concluded, “I think we have a pretty good chance this year,. It all just comes down to chemistry and teamwork.”
