Writing Conference Brought World Known Authors!

By:Becca Watford

In 1990, Lander University (Lander College then) hosted a Writer’s Workshop, which was designed by student writers. Professional writers Stanley Flythe and Louise Shivers and Jean Valentine all came to hold sessions. Flythe’s work appeared in the New York Times and wrote non-fiction. Shivers wrote fiction and the movie “Summer Heat” was based on her book “Here to Get My Baby out of Jail” which was named Best First Novel by USA Today. Jean Valentine had published five collections of poetry. Forty-eight students came to Lander for the workshop, and at least fifty-three people over all attended.
